The pupils of Kiltealy impressed again this year with fantastic efforts going into Halloween costumes.
Ghosts and goblins, witches and werewolves, zombies and skeletons; were scattered throughout the group that traveled around the village.
We stopped off to see the children from the playschool in their costumes and they treated us to a song and nursery rhyme.
We continued down through the village to the carpark where our group photo was taken before making our way back to the school.
Congratulations to all the 5th and 6th class pupils who were part of the victorious Rackard League Football Team. The team defeated Oulart in the Enniscorthy District Final yesterday on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-2.
Padraig Waters (1-2) had a great game, getting vital scores in the first half when there was very little between the teams. Ryan Purcell used his height to his advantage at full forward, making things very difficult for the Oulart full back line.
Danny Fitzhenry was very influential at midfield, supplying great balls into the forwards. Dylan Purcell, David Nolan and Noel Cowman were powerful in the backs throughout the 50 minutes. James Aylward was introduced towards the end and made his mark on the game.
Kiltealy players: Ryan Purcell, Padraig Waters, Danny Fitzhenry, David Nolan, Dylan Purcell, Noel Cowman, James Aylward, Jacques Neville and Cillian Hanrahan all made appearances on the team throughout the league campaign.
The team now go on to contest the county semi-final which will be played after the mid-term break.
Well done to the boys for getting this far in the league. We are very proud of their success and we will be out again in numbers to support them on their quest to the final.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2016
The Transition Year Students from The FCJ were in the school last Friday to launch this years Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Kiltealy N.S has a long tradition of supporting this cause and we are sure that this year will be as successful a collection as previous years.
The children watched a short video which showed some less fortunate children receiving their shoeboxes last Christmas. It was lovely to see the expression of pure delight on the faces of all the children and this made us all realise just how fortunate we are.
All pupils have now received their information leaflets which will give them and their parents all the information they need to get involved.
Shoeboxes will be collected the week after the mid-term break.
The children in Kiltealy thoroughly enjoyed a range of activities throughout Maths Week last week. Well done to all involved.
Some activities they engaged in are listed below.
- The whole school took part in the Maths Problem Of The Day Challenge. These included- A Time Estimation Challenge, A Length Estimation Challenge and A Number Estimation Challenge. There were overall winners and class runners up for each problem.
- A special round of their weekly Problem Solving Quiz with double the quiz questions and an opportunity to score double the points.
- Some interactive whiteboard maths games. They got very competitive as they tried to not only beat each others scores but also beat the timer in multiplication, division, addition and subtraction games. 5th & 6th also played and Angle Alienation Game where they showed their skills and knowledge of angle degrees.
- Outdoor Maths Trails were a great hit and we were lucky that the weather held up for this fun activity.
- A fun day was had on Thursday when the children were quizzed on all their Maths knowledge to date. The final score count was extremely close in all age groups.
- The children created some beautiful Maths art that is on display throughout the building.

Jollyphonics at Home
Practice Jolly Phonics at home with your child using these Jolly Songs and the actions that go with them. Your child should be able to show you the actions for the sounds. Keep checking your sound book for the sounds that have been learned in class and any new sounds that have been covered, and then sing the songs at home while you practice the songs.

Junior and Senior Infants – The Story so far!!!
We have 18 children in the Junior and Senior infant classroom . The infant classroom has had a very busy start to the new school year. Here are some of the things we have being learning:
English
Sounds
Junior Infants have started learning their sounds using the Jolly phonics programme.
We have done lots of activities to help us practice our sounds.
- We use our sound books to say our new sounds are revise sounds we have already learned.
- We sing the Jolly Phonics songs with the special action for each sound.
- We have started blending some sounds together to read CVC words such as cat , hot , sit etc
- We play games with our sounds and look for pictures and words that start with our sounds. We can make sets of pictures that start with the same sound.
- We look for our sounds all around the classroom. In our books, in the library, on posters, on the whiteboard and when the teacher is writing.
Writing
- Junior Infants have also started learning how to form their letters. It is vital that your child learns from the start to hold his/her pencil correctly ( see you tube video – Pencil Grasp (Learn to pick up a pencil). An incorrectly formed grip is very difficult to change, so it is very important your child learns to hold the pencil correctly from the start.
Senior Infants ( sounds and writing)
- Senior Infants are revising their letter sounds from the Junior Infant curriculum and have started writing capital letters. Senior infants are also working hard on their Tricky Word list. These are words that we cannot sound out so we have to learn them by heart. However we know that looking at the first and last letter will help us reading the tricky words!
Reading
Both classes have read their first class reader and are looking forward to reading more about Max, Kitty and Finn in their next reader.

Gaeilge
In Gaeilge we have learned about Mé Féin ( myself) , An Scoil ( school) and Oíche Shamhna ( Halloween). The children know the Irish for most colours now and we practice these every day. The children practice comhrá with a partner and sometimes our friend “Teidí” even drops in for a comhrá with the class.
We love our fun new interactive programme on our class whiteboard.
SESE
Before the Mid Term break, we are talking a lot about Autumn and we went on an Autumn walk looking for signs of Autumn. The children found horse chestnuts, pine cones, golden crunchy leaves and apples. While we were on our Autumn walk we also looked out for shapes and realized we have squares, rectangles, circles and triangles in our school yard!
